As regards to road transport, an interchange is a special intersection or a road junction designed to enable road users cross, enter or exit the expressway without interfering with the flow of traffic.

Types Of Interchange

The basic types of interchanges are

• Clover leaf
• Diamond
• Directional
• Trumpet

Clover leaf

This type of interchange is designed to allow vehicular turning movements off or into the expressway from four directions using loop type connections. The main purpose of a clover leaf is majorly to allow two highways to cross without the need for any traffic to be stopped, for any turning direction weather left or right turn. Clover leaf eliminates left turn and traffic conflicts for all movement. Clover leaf also has disadvantages which is traffic weaving.

Diamond

Diamond interchange has four ramps which allow vehicles to enter or exit the main highway. It is usually used where a major road crosses a minor road. This type of interchange avoids interference with traffic flow, and it is most effective in areas where traffic is light.

Directional

A directional interchange is used to transfer high volume of traffic, particularly where two major roads intersect

Trumpet

Trumpet interchange provides access to the expressway at T-junction.

Road Junction

A road junction or road intersection is a place where two or more roads meet

T-junction: This is a place where two roads meet in the shape of letter T Y-junction:Y-junction is a place where two roads meet in the form of Peter Y Cross Road: A cross road is a place where two roads cross each other.
