The nature of some road traffic accidents will give you clues on the types of injuries passengers are likely to sustain. There are four types of motor vehicle collision (MVC) and each has the nature of injuries that are likely to be sustained for instance

Head on collision

Head on impact collision

Suspected injuries :

  • This is capable of producing multiple injuries caused by wind shield; on scalp, face, neck and spine injuries.
  • Heat on steering wheel will cause; heart, ribs, breastbone, lungs and skin tattooing (bruises) injuries
  • Heat on the dashboard will cause- blunt injuries to the liver, kidney, intestines and spinal cord

Lateral impact collision

Suspected injuries :

The lateral impact collision will cause head, neck, upper arms, shoulder, chest, abdomen, pelvis and lower arm injuries

Suspected injuries :

This type of vehicle collision will cause spinal cord injuries

Suspected injuries :

Roll over impact collision will cause injuries like in head on collision, lateral impact collision and in rear impact collision, and the vehicle occupants are likely to be thrown out. In some cases, occupants thrown out are likely to die.

As a rescuer, measures must be taken to ensure that Safety is to the advantage of rescuers, victims and bystanders putting into consideration types of hazard that are eminent. Possible hazard to watch for at accident scene will include

  • traffic flow
  • gasoline spill
  • Hazardous materials eg corrosive, gaseous, poisonous agents etc
  • Explosive and exposed electrical lines
  • Unstable vehicle
  • Environmental condition eg rain dusty, haze environment

Also, rescuers must adhere to certain safety measures which includes

  • At the accident scene, park your vehicle at a safe place
  • Display reflective warning signs ( c-caution/triangle)100 – 200m away from the scene
  • Sympathizers/ onlookers to help to control traffic
  • Rescue the injured and trapped victims, give first aid care and convey injured victims to the nearest adequate medical centre
